In a dramatic turn of events, federal authorities say they've arrested the man accused of setting into motion one of Los Angeles' deadliest wildfires — a blaze that claimed 12 lives, destroyed thousands of homes, and scorched more than 23,000 acres in January.
Officials revealed that 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht of Melbourne, Florida is facing federal arson charges for allegedly igniting an earlier, smaller fire known as the Lachman Fire on January 1 in the Pacific Palisades. While the initial burn covered only eight acres and spared buildings, investigators believe hidden embers lingered underground within dense vegetation. Just one week later, powerful Santa Ana winds whipped those embers back to life, transforming them into the fast-moving inferno now known as the Palisades Fire.
Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli described it plainly: despite firefighters' efforts to suppress the first fire, it continued smoldering beneath the surface until nature, in a tragic twist, unleashed it again. The resurgence leveled neighborhoods across Malibu, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the Pacific Palisades.
Rinderknecht, federal prosecutors say, is charged with Destruction of Property by Means of Fire — a felony carrying a minimum of five years in prison and up to 20 if convicted. Additional charges could follow. At Wednesday’s news conference, Essayli hinted at disturbing digital evidence discovered during the investigation, including an AI-generated image prompt depicting a burning city.
The accused’s alleged behavior on January 1 raises unsettling questions. Working as an Uber driver, witnesses recall him appearing irritated during rides. After dropping off his final passenger, prosecutors claim he walked a local trail, made unanswered calls to a friend, and repeatedly viewed a French rap video that visually depicts objects being set ablaze. Essayli alleges Rinderknecht then started the Lachman Fire, phoned emergency responders multiple times, fled in his car, only to return and record video of the flames up close.
Weeks later, during a January 24 law enforcement interview, prosecutors say he lied — insisting he only stumbled across the blaze while hiking. Geolocation records reportedly place him just 30 feet from the fire’s origin at the critical moment it spread.
Officials have yet to detail a motive. Rinderknecht is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Orlando later today.
The arrest has sparked strong reactions. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called it “a step forward toward closure and justice,” recalling the sleepless nights firefighters endured and vowing to help displaced families rebuild. The LAFD, amid criticism over its fire response, stated the act was intentional and praised its law enforcement partners for moving the case forward. Governor Gavin Newsom pledged continued state support for the investigation, framing the arrest as progress toward justice for thousands whose lives were forever changed.
